Wexford FC boss Ian Ryan has confirmed his intent to remain at Ferrycarrig Park despite interest from Waterford FC.
It had been reported yesterday that the Blues had sought permission from Wexford to speak to Ryan regarding their managerial vacancy.
34-year-old Ryan has had a somewhat successful stint at Ferrycarrig Park to date.
When he took over in 2021, Wexford were bottom of the First Division having lost their first eight games. He currently has the South East outfit just three points off the play-off positions.
Waterford FC’s board were believed to be fans of Ryan’s style of football, and were hoping to sound him out on the position.
The Blues are seeking the latest in a long line of managers after the departures of Alan Reynolds, John Sheridan, Kevin Sheedy, Marc Bircham and most recently - Ian Morris.
Wexford FC released a statement today to confirm that Ryan has reaffirmed his commitment to the club.
"Wexford FC are delighted to confirm that despite media speculation and interest from another club, manager Ian Ryan has reaffirmed his commitment to the club. Wexford gave Ian his first League of Ireland team manager role in May 2021 and he is contracted to the club until the end of the 2023 season. Having taken us from the bottom of the table, we are now genuine play off contenders with a strong squad built and developed by Ian."
Ryan said that while he is flattered by the approach, he wishes to continue the work he is doing at Wexford.
“While flattered by the interest, I am enjoying my time at Wexford and enjoy the full support from everyone at the club, and I am determined to reward their faith in me by seeing this project through to its conclusion”
Wexford FC say they greatly appreciate the loyalty shown by Ian, 'a quality that is not always evident in the game these days'.
Waterford FC are currently third in the League of Ireland First Division table, with caretaker managers Gary Hunt and David Breen guiding the Blues to five straight wins for the first time since July 2012.
