The Waterford footballers go in search of their first championship win in six years on Sunday when they face Tipperary in the Munster Quarter Final at Fraher Field.

The sides played out a draw when they met in Division 4 last month and Déise captain Jason Curry expects another close encounter. “The day above in Bansha, we played well and probably should have come away with a victory. I don’t think there’s too much between the teams. If we give a good performance, we shouldn’t be too far away.”

The Deise's last championship victory came in 2018 against Wexford and Curry has fond memories of that afternoon. “The heat! It was one of the warmest days I ever played! Just the joy and the relief afterwards was unbelievable. A couple of weeks later we played Monaghan. Monaghan weren’t too far away from an All Ireland final and you saw the crowd that came to Fraher Field. They are the days you play football for.”

A championship win would make their year. “To get past Tipp, that would be success. We haven’t got a Munster win in a long time so you have to start there. After that, it’s bonus territory.”

Ross Browne, Robbie McGrath, Caolan Mac Craith, Willie Beresford and James Power will all get their championship debuts on Sunday. Defender Liam Fennell misses out through suspension.
