There was late night drama in the first senior football quarter final at Fraher Field as Ballinacourty beat Kilrossanty 4-6 to 3-5 after extra time.
A last gasp goal by Michael Maher sealed victory for Courty in a game that featured seven green flags, four penalties and two red cards. It finished 3-5 apiece in normal time as Kilrossanty sub keeper Josh Kay converted a 45 in the 66th minute. Earlier in the second half, he saved a penalty from Mark Ferncombe.
Two Paul Whyte goals, one from the spot, gave Kilrossanty a slender 2-2 to 2-1 advantage at the break. Both sides were reduced to fourteen men as Patrick Hurney and Mark Prendergast received straight red cards. Conor Prunty and David Looby (penalty) goaled for Courty.
Ferncombe netted another penalty but that was cancelled out by Pa Cunningham. Sean Whelan-Barrett fisted the lead point deep into injury time before Kay forced an additional twenty minutes. Whelan-Barrett's second point followed by Maher's goal was enough in the end.
Courty boss Peter Queally said that it was a morale boosting result after bowing out of the hurling championship two weeks ago to Dungarvan. "It softens the blow," he told WLR Sport. "It might sound unusual but it wasn't hard to pick them up."
In the curtain raiser, Ardmore secured their senior status with a 6-10 to 0-5 win over Portlaw. John O'Brien, Ciaran Keating, Padraig Foley, David Gartland and John Gartland all found the net.
