Galway GAA has announced Henry Shefflin as its new Senior County manager. The decision is expected to be officially ratified with the county board shortly.

The Ballyhale Shamrocks man has 10 All-Ireland medals and three Hurler of the Year awards with his county and another three with the club, while he also managed Ballyhale to All-Ireland victories in 2019 and 2020.

Shefflin's managerial record to date

The 42-year-old served as the club's manager for two years. Shefflin has been working with Thomastown this season.

The Galway appointment will be Henry Shefflin's first intercounty management position.

Shefflin will be joined by fellow Kilkenny man Richie O’Neill, who will act as a coach, with his full management team set to be finalised in the coming weeks.

Reaction to the Henry Shefflin Galway appointment in GAA circle

The move may come as a shock to some in  as former Clare and Wexford manager Davy Fitzgerald had been heavily linked with the Galway role.

Speaking to RTE's Game On when the news broke, Shefflin's former intercounty team mate Jackie Tyrell said as a Kilkenny man he was disappointed with the news, but that it was great for Galway.
