Dundalk proved too strong for Waterford FC at the RSC on Friday night.
Andy Boyle headed the visitors in front after 25 minutes when he rose unmarked to finish off a Michael Duffy free-kick from the right.
The Lilywhites went further in front on  42 minutes when Prince Mutswunguma pushed a Dundalk player inside the 18 yards box and Chris Shields gave Paul Martin no chance from the resultant penalty.
Michael Duffy scored a wonder goal one minute into the second half. He found the net with his right foot from the left flank.
John Martin struck the Dundalk woodwork on two occasions afterwards.
Waterford had only two outfield substitutes due to injuries. The Blues manager Kevin Sheedy said afterwards that he would not put Academy player's on the bench as he feels young player's are not getting protection from referees.

Elsewhere last night in the top flight, Goals in the last 20 minutes from Rory Gaffney and Seán Hoare saw Shamrock Rovers beat Finn Harps 2-0.

The win sees Stephen Bradley's side join Dublin neighbours St. Pat's at the top of the table after they enjoyed a 3-0 win over Longford Town

Elsewhere, Drogheda and Sligo Rovers played out a 1-1 draw at United Park while Derry came from behind to beat Bohemians 2-1 at Dalymount Park.

The Blues are back in action on Bank Holiday Monday next (May 3rd) when they face a daunting trip to Tallaght Stadium to face champions, Shamrock Rovers. It's a 2pm kick-off in the capital and WLR will broadcast the game live thanks to McConnell's Toyota, Waterford with commentary team Ray Scott and Matt Keane.
