Former Déise hurling boss Derek McGrath has hailed the recently retired Philip Mahony as one of the best man markers in the business.

"He was a shutdown merchant. He's one of those fellas that fits into the Brendan Maher category where he can shutdown and he can hurl. He's shutdown Conor Lehane, Seamus Callanan, TJ Reid, Joe Canning, Colin Fennelly and he's still hurling himself. We used him to cancel guys out and still have that ability to be on that ruck ball when you know Philip is over a ball with four or five around it. He's going to be lowest down over it and the safest and come out and give his trademark overhead hand pass or sideways hand pass and people would take it for granted not realising the absolute skill involved in the very thing he is doing."
