Former Déise defender Brian Flannery believes that Tony Browne could be the next Waterford hurling manager.
Liam Cahill stepped down on Friday after three seasons in charge. Browne served as selector in 2022 under the Tipperary man. Speaking on WLR's Lár Na Páirce show, Flannery says that the 1998 Hurler of the Year is a contender for the job.
"The likes of Davy Fitz and Derek McGrath have been mentioned. For me, I wouldn't be looking to the past. I'd be looking to the here and now. For me, somebody like Tony Browne who has made a huge contribution this year and Liam Cahill has acknowledged as much. He is hugely regarded by the players and anybody who has ever worked with him. He is one of the most intelligent hurling men that I know. It wouldn't surprise me if the county board were knocking on Tony's door to be the next Waterford senior hurling manager."
He feels that Cahill can be proud of his time with the Déise. "Initially, you'd have to be disappointed. Liam Cahill is a top class manager, I don't think there's any doubt about that. He has made a significant contribution in the last three years to Waterford hurling. Competing in a Munster final, an All Ireland final and winning a league title, it's an impressive three year spell."
