Earlier this week, WLR reported that there was concern amongst the Waterford football playing group about their Allianz Football League meeting with Antrim set for this Saturday.
Several players had made it known that they would be unwilling to play the fixture in Portglenone due to rising covid-19 cases in the area.
The Waterford Captain Conor Murray said that it was not an easy decision to make, but it was made for health concerns of the players.
As well as personal health concerns of the players; several members of the squad had been informed by their employers that they would not be able to attend work without self isolating for fourteen days on returning from the North.
The players have also mentioned concerns around the lack of testing in the GAA. Intercounty panels are not having base line or serial testing carried out as a standard practice. Yesterday, the Gaelic Players Association announced that they may have to reconsider their support for intercounty games without stringent testing being carried out on Intercounty players.
Former Deise hurler and current GPA executive member Noel Connors spoke to WLR sport last evening and advised that the GPA stance is that baseline testing would needed to safely run games
The sentiment of Connors and the GPA is echoed by Murray and the Waterford players
Speakinng to WLR sport yesterday, manager Benji Whelan said that they squad were happy to play the game in the Republic - and that the reason for conceding was entirely based on health grounds
Last night, the latest (and possibly final) wrinkle to the story was added when Antrim GAA released a statement laying down the gauntlet for the Deise side
As of this morning, there has been no official confirmation as of yet - but WLR Sport understands that the Waterford team are accepting the offer for the relocated fixture and will once again be set to play the game.
