The Blues travelled to Turners Cross with one thing in their mind - three points.

With the door to Europe having been left open by their closest rivals Dundalk as they failed to take a win against Bohemians, Franny Rockets men knew that a win against bottom of the table Cork City would be enough to launch them back into third place with two games remaining.

Waterford FC assistant Manager David Breen knew how important this game was heading in to it, saying that the players had trained well and were well up for the challenge.

The returning Daryl Murphy was a huge coup for the Blues when he signed before the season returned, he got his first start game against Shel's last weekend and before this evenings throw in, he said that Waterford needed to be ruthless in front of goal

The first 20 minutes of the game provided little by the way of entertaining football – both sides nullifying each other attempts at advancing

However, on thirteen minutes Dylan McGlade had a shot saved by Brian Murphy after a pass from Corey Galvin.

Seven minutes later Kevin O Connor played a ball down from the left to Deshane Dalling, he squared the ball to Dylan McGlade, who shot wide from just outside the penalty area

Jake O Brien, the Cork City defender took the ball off the foot of Matty Smith who was about to shoot from a good position on 24 minutes.

11 minutes later Kurtis Byrne tired his luck with a cheeky lob from 35 yards, but his effort went narrowly over the crossbar

The lions share of the action was condensed into the final 15 minutes of the game with both sides going gung ho to claim three points.

Cork City had a strong claim for a penalty on 81 minutes, when Deshane Dalling’s shot appeared to be handled by Jake Davidson, but the officials waved play on.

Four minutes later, as the end approached, Deshane Dalling had a shot blocked by Brian Murphy. The ball fell to Kit Elliot who fired in a close-range shot, but his shot was deflected out for a corner kick

Waterford piled on the pressure in the dyeing minutes with Will Fitzgerald picking out Daryl Murphy from the right. Murphy looked odds on to score but Liam Bossin saved superbly.

Deep into stoppage time a good three man move involving Will Fitzgerald, Robbie Weir and Tunmise Sobowale saw the ball placed into the path of Daryl Murphy but again Bossin denied the Waterford substitute

In the dyeing seconds, off the back of a corner kick Cork had the ball in the Waterford net but it was ruled out by the referee for a push on a Waterford defender.

The Blues will have to accept the reward of a single point which sees them remain in 4th place with two games remaining in the League season.

Speaking at full time, manager Franny Rocket said he was happy with the performance of his players, but it was disappointing to leave behind some of the chances that had fallen to them
