Donal O’Rourke has admitted that family reasons forced him to step away as Waterford camogie boss.
After two years at the helm, he could no longer commit to the 24/7 demands of inter county management. “I just ran out of energy; it was a tough two years,” he told WLR Sport. “With two small kids at home, it’s not easy to be able to commit to four or five nights a week in a management capacity anyway. There’s a lot more to it than just coaching on the pitch. I had to make the decision and I just felt that the team are in a great place stepping away now. Hopefully the next man or woman coming in will bring them to another level.”
The Cappoquin man has been inundated with messages over the past week. “A lot of people were bemused that I stepped away to be honest with you. A lot of people were saying we were so close after Galway. I suppose for the first time in two years I had to think of myself and my family. The commitment level is crazy. I’m an hour and fifteen minutes away from Waterford city. My wife is just in the door at home and the two kids and I’d be gone straight away. It’s not easy.”
