The Waterford hurlers ended their Munster championship campaign with a 2-30 to 2-17 loss to Cork at Páirc Uí Chaoimh last night.
Man of the match Patrick Horgan and Alan Cadogan netted first half goals for the Rebels as they led 2-11 to 0-11 at the break. Second half strikes from Stephen and Shane Bennett kept a new look Waterford in contention before Cork pulled away for a thirteen point win. Horgan finished the game with 1-10.
Déise boss Paraic Fanning told WLR Sport that he wants to be in a position to put things right in 2020. "I am in the position. I got a two year term. It's not even a time now for discussing it. We need to reflect and review and make informed decisions ourselves then because the championship goes so quickly and you go from game to game. Now there's a little bit of headspace for people."
Following a painful home defeat to Limerick, he sought to restore pride on Leeside last night. "We were very hurt over how we played the last day. We were looking first of all for a performance and do ourselves justice. We did leave people down last week in the sense that we didn't deliver the level of performance we would expect of ourselves. We were looking for an honesty of effort, which we got."
He says that there needs to be a measured response to results this summer. "There is things that have to be addressed and things that have to be looked at. I think it was to be done in a measured and balanced way without any crazy reactions which we've already had from people who, with the greatest of respect, don't really see or understand what has gone into the team and how well these lads have prepared."
