Waterford FC return to Extra.ie FAI Cup action this weekend as the Blues take on UCD in their Quarter-Final tie.
The Blues head for the UCD Bowl having fallen to defeat last Friday night against top of the table Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght. Two second half goals from Danny Mandriou saw Rovers take the points despite a battling performance from Marc Bircham’s side.
The Blues' path to the quarter-final has seen wins against Athlone Town and Kilnamanagh.
UCD come into Friday night's clash on the back of a 5-2 win over Cabinteely last weekend, while the Students have already knocked Shelbourne and Longford Town out of this year's cup.
The sides last met back in October 2019 when the Blues ran out comfortable 4-2 winners. Of the last 18 meetings between the two sides, the Students edge the standings with 9 wins and 2 draws.
Speaking ahead of Friday’s match against UCD, manager Marc Bircham said:
"Everyone loves the cup, the fans love the cup and the people of Waterford love the cup, which I've learned in my short time here.
“We look to Friday night [v UCD] as another big game. We want a good performance and we’ll look to advance. It’s a chance to get into a Cup semi-final which doesn't come around too often and the players are looking forward to the game.
“We know UCD will be well up for the game so we can’t take anything for granted. They’re doing well in the First Division and had a big win last weekend so we know there won't be anything easy in this game."
Team News: Marc Bircham has an injury crisis to deal with ahead of Friday’s game. Anthony Wordsworth, Eddie Nolan, Shane Griffin, Paul Martin, Max Hutchison and Cian Kavanagh are expected to miss the game while Junior Quitirna and Greg Halford are doubtful.
WLR will broadcast the game live with coverage starting at 7.30pm with Ray Scott and Matt Keane on commentary. Coverage thanks to McConnell's Toyota Waterford.
