In 2015, Beth Carton won a league and championship double with Waterford and scored a goal in the All Ireland intermediate final at Croke Park. All at the age of seventeen. A dream start to her senior inter county career.
Two minutes into the second half, she struck a free low under six Kildare defenders on the line at the Hill 16 end. Did she go for goal? “I mishit it a small bit to be honest! A lot of people think I might have went for it. After it went in, Nicola Morrissey turned to me and she was like ‘why didn’t you tell me’ because I nearly hit her on the way in with it! It was obviously a turning point and a bit of luck with it as well.”
The De La Salle All Star enjoyed parading the Jack McGrath cup back in the Déise. There were many highlights in the days that followed. “One would definitely be bringing the cup over the bridge. We hopped off the other side and we walked the cup over. That’s something that will always be in my memory.”
Carton was back to school that week. “I went to Presentation Secondary School and they were massive into sport. Myself and Brianna O’Regan were there. Valerie O’Brien went to the school as well so we brought the cup in. That was another big moment for the three of us.”
