ALLIANZ NHL, Div. 1A Rd. 3, CORK 1-22 WATERFORD 1-19
Despite a strong final quarter Waterford fell short against Cork in Round 3 of the Allianz NHL at a bitterly cold Super Valu Pairc Uì Chaoimh this afternoon.
Sean Walsh netted the Waterford goal after showing good persistence in the 26th minute as the Dèise trailed by a point at the interval (0-11 to 1-7).
The lively Paddy Leavey hit two long range points in the opening period which never really sparkled, the Ballygunner midfielder ended with 0-3 in what was his best game in a Dèise jersey.
Patrick Horgan punished Waterford from frees with Jack O' Connor and Brian Hayes also getting good change out of the visitors defence.
It was O' Connor's goal in the 50th minute that gave Cork a healthy advantage which they wouldn't relinquish but they were pushed all the way by Davy Fitzgerald's charges who put in a storming final quarter.
The Rebels were ten points up in the 55th minute. Calum Lyons ended with 0-4 in total (0-2 from play and 0-2 from frees) as the visitors really upped the anti.
Ten 2nd-half wides ultimately proved costly for Waterford who will now aim to pick themselves up for a penultimate round clash with Wexford on March 10th in Walsh Park.
