Late goals from Stephen Quirke and Paudie Feehan saw Tipperary survive a scare from Waterford in the Munster SFC Quarter Final before a crowd 1,443 supporters in Thurles (3-9 to 1-11).
A shock was on the cards when a Darragh Corcoran goal gave the Déise a 1-8 to 1-7 lead with ten minutes left. Corcoran scored 1-4 from play in a man of the match performance but Ephie Fitzgerald's charges couldn't hold on for their first Munster victory in thirteen years.
"I'm very proud of them," the Waterford boss remarked afterwards. "We were in it right to the finish. I can't ask any more really."
He was full of praise for Corcoran. "Darragh was a joy to watch. Darragh is a quiet guy by nature but the talent he has. They just couldn't handle his pace today."
A soccer style goal by Stephen Quirke and a scrappy finish from Paudie Feehan got the Premier County across the line. Steven O'Brien marked his return from injury with 1-3 in the first half. The big man fisted to the net on 28 minutes. They struggled to break down the Waterford blanket defence for long periods as Michael Kiely and Darach O Cathasaigh frustrated the Premier attack. David Power's team got their act together after Corcoran's strike with a late flurry of 2-2.
