Ireland's Sam Bennett put on a burst of power to win the 10th stage of the Tour de France on Tuesday, a 168.5-km ride from the Ile d'Oleron to the Ile de Ré.

Slovenian Primoz Roglic retained the overall leader's yellow jersey.

The 29-year-old from Carrick-on-Suir has finished second, third and fourth in the opening week of this year's tour and has held the green jersey.

He is the sixth Irish person to ever win a tour stage in the competition.

The Carrick-On-Suir cyclist has won back the green jersey after getting over the line in a tight finish.

In an emotional post-race interview Bennett broke down in tears saying: “You dream of it, you never think it will happen. Sorry, I don’t mean to be a cry baby . . . ”

Bennett is now 21 points ahead of Peter Sagan.

Earlier on in the competition, Bennett secured a second, third and fourth place position.
