It was March 24th of 2020 when Olympic Organisers bit the bullet and decided to postpone the games.
With rising covid case numbers and mass uncertainty, nobody really knew how the games could be played.
The tough decision was made to put it back by one year with the hopes that Japan would be in a better position 12 months down the road.
With that same date fast approaching, the outlook is almost as bleak as to whether or not they can go ahead this year.
A recent Kyodo News survey found that 80% of Japanese people want the games to be postponed or canceled amid rising case numbers and the emergence of numerous covid variants. The survey results were released almost simultaneously to an announcement by Yoshiro Mori, the president of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics organizing committee where he stated that postponing the games would be "absolutely impossible" and not something that had been considered.
Former two-time Olympian from An Rinn Jamie Costin had to deal first hand with last year's postponement when two of the athletes he trains had to accept they would not be going to Tokyo.
Jamie spoke to Nigel earlier this week about the challenges that uncertainty brings to the Olympic hopefuls
