Prince Mutswunguma scored the only goal of the game at the RSC on Saturday as Waterford FC moved on to six points on the Premier League table.
He was the only change from the team which lost to St Patrick's Athletic the previous Tuesday in Richmond Park. He replaced Shane Griffin.
When the Longford Town defender Joe Gorman failed to control a long ball out of the Waterford defence after 9 minutes Prince Mutswunguma display wonderful composure to drill the ball past the visiting goalkeeper Michael Kelly from inside the penalty area. Paul Martin who was a doubt with a neck injury prior to the game saved well from Rob Manley on 15 minutes.
Mutswunguma should have scored a second goal right on halftime but he shot narrowly wide after being set up by John Martin.
The Blues were reduced to ten players 16 minutes into the second half when central defender Kyle Ferguson was sent packing for raising his elbow to Longford player.
Despite having the numerical advantage the visiting side did not trouble the hosts although Cameron Evans did prevent an effort by Dean Byrne from entering the net 10 minutes from full time.
