Ballymac back in All-Ireland for first time since 1998

Ballymac back in All-Ireland for first time since 1998

Ballymacarbry 1.10 - 0.05 Clan Eireann.

Ballymacarbry are back in the All-Ireland club ladies' football final for the first time in 25 years and will play their first-ever final in Croke Park.

They face the defending Champions Kilkerrin Clonberne on December 16th, with the Galway and Connacht Champions beating Kilmacud Crokes in Parnell Park 0.15 to 1.10 after extra time.

Ballymac secured a 1.10 to 0.05 win over Clan Eireann in the semi-final where they held their Armagh hosts to just two points from play in the hour.

The Waterford Champions defence can be thanked with Michelle McGrath and Louise Ryan marshaling the defensive line throughout, closing down the Clan Eireann attack at every opportunity.

The two youngest players on the team - Summer Peters and Ruby Browne deserve huge plaudits for their performances, while Lauren Fitzpatrick had a stellar performance in goal but contributed hugely in attack coming off her line to set up attacking plays.

A cagey start to the game with both sides seeing chances miss the target. The home side opened the scoring after seven minutes when Niamh Murray split the posts with a free.

Ballymac responded through Bríd McMaugh who kicked two long-range points to take the early lead.

The visitors heaped pressure on the Clan Eireann goalkeeper in that opening period, but three attempts fell into her hands and were swiftly dealt with.

While the margins were tight, Ballymac looked to be the better of the two sides with Clan Eireann fighting to stay in touching distance.

A soft free coughed up by the Waterford Champions was sent over the bar by Niamh Murray for her second score of the day.

In response, Kelly Ann Hogan broke out from the defence, carried up the field, and finished off a fantastic point that bounced off the crossbar on its way over.

Ballymac kept to the task turning over the kick-out with Summer Peters kicking a point to send her side 0.4 - 0.2 ahead, but another needless free opened the door to Clan Eireann with Niamh Murray tacking on her third point of the afternoon over the placed ball.

Ballymac had the lion's share of the positive play in the opening half, but the final pass kept letting them down in front of the goal, with the sides heading to the changing rooms at the break on the narrowest of margins on 0.4 to 0.3 in favour the Munster Champions.

On the resumption, the home team set out to reduce the deficit at the first opportunity, winning the throw-in Niamh Murray was clean through on goal. Lauren Fitzpatrick advanced off her line with Murray kicking wide, missing a crucial green flag.

At the other end of the field Kelly Ann Hogan and Aileen Wall linked up well with Hogan sending Wall through to the goalmouth where she finished to the net, raising the first and only green flag of the match. Mairead Boyce followed that up, pointing a pass delivered by Hogan.

The hosts replied with a free, but Hogan was once again on the mark with another long-range point.

Clan Eireann weren't done though. Top scorer Niamh Murray came agonisingly close to goaling on the other end, but for the second time in the game, sent it wide.

Bríd McMaugh notched her third point of the contest, breaking a Clan Eireann tackle and combining with Hogan to increase the margin. 15-year-old Summer Peter's followed that score with a well-worked point that could have been a goal.

With 15 minutes left to play, Ballymac looked certain to take the win; they were 1.08 to 0.04 ahead at that stage.

Bríd McMaugh added her fourth point, followed closely by Clare Walsh who put the icing on the cake as she raised their tenth white flag to win 1.10 to 0.05.

Scorers - Ballymacarbry: Aileen Wall 1.00, Bríd McMaugh &  Summer Peters 0.3, Kelly Ann Hogan 0.02 (1f), Muireaan Boyce & Clare Walsh 0.01.
