Ballygunner breeze past Ballyea and into Munster semis

Ballygunner 3-20

Ballyea 2-06

Ballygunner battered past Ballyea with 17 points to spare as they booked their place in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship semi-finals with ease.

Mikey Mahony was the star of the show, while there was also 2-1 from Billy O'Keeffe in a dominant display by Darragh O'Sullivan's charges.

Philip Mahony made his return from injury for the Waterford champions while the Banner side were without talisman Tony Kelly.

The Gunners were dominant from the offset as the Clare champions failed to register a single score from play in the first half.

Paul Flanagan tracked Dessie Hutchinson throughout, and the scoring was opened when he fouled the forward and Pauric Mahony slipped the requisite free over the bar.

Niall Deasy responded with a dead ball of his own, before midfielder Paddy Leavy opened out his shoulders and let rip to restore the Gunners' advantage on 4 minutes.

Deasy responded in turn once more with a well-struck free from inside his own half, but that was to be Ballyea's last score for 23 minutes.

Pauric Mahony tapped over a 65 and then his brothers combined for the crucial first half moment. Kevin Mahony's beautiful flick played in his brother Mikey who made no mistake firing across Barry Coote and into the net.

Another Hutchinson effort on goal was reverted for a 65 from which Mahony grabbed his fourth point, with the Gunners five points to the good at the end of the first quarter.

Conor Sheahan fired in a great point from midfield, and it could have been essentially game over on 18 minutes but for a fantastic flying save from Coote to deny him.

Again, the 65 was lapped up before Mahony tapped over another free to give Darragh O'Sullivan's men an eight-point lead.

Ballyea almost gave the Gunners a scare when Aaron Griffin played the ball across the square but Mossy Gavin's pull slid across the ground and wide.

That was punished once again as Dessie Hutchinson sprayed the sliotar to Sheahan who notched his second point.

Deasy arrested Ballyea's slump with a 65 in first half stoppage time, but with Philip Mahony minding the house impeccably - the Banner men had no joy whatsoever.

To add to Ballyea's misery, the Gunners had the breeze in the second half.

Niall Deasy opened the second half scoring with a well-taken free, but that was soon cancelled out by a well-taken third by Conor Sheahan.

Veteran Shane O'Sullivan then pitched in with a swerving stunner on the sideline before Kevin Mahony turned his marker and handed the Gunners a ten-point lead.

Two Pauric Mahony frees either side of a fine point from the outstanding Mikey Mahony extended the lead out to thirteen, before Mikey Mahony and Billy O'Keeffe made it a whopping 1-16 to 0-4 going into the final quarter, with Ballyea still not having managed a score from play by that point.

Matters became all the more miserable for the home side as Kevin Mahony played in Billy O'Keeffe to bat to the net for goal number two on 48 minutes, before Pearse Lillis finally registered Ballyea's first point from play.

They were awarded a penalty moments later as Eddie Hayden fouled Gary Brennan, and Niall Deasy made no mistake in burying the sliotar to the bottom right corner past Stephen O'Keeffe.

In the next passage of play, Ballyea managed to plunder another goal from nowhere - with Deasy finding substitute Martin O'Leary who added a second green flag in as many minutes.

That was to matter very little in the grand scheme, as substitute Conor Power restored a thirteen point margin for the Gunners, before a superb pass from man-of-the-match Mikey Mahony found Billy O'Keeffe who again slipped the sliotar past the onrushing Barry Coote.

Niall Deasy and Conor Power traded late points before Harry Ruddle rounded off the scoring.

3-20 for the brilliant Ballygunner, who now march on to face the Tipperary champions at Walsh Park in the semi-final.
