Andrew Casey struck the winning penalty as Ballyduff Upper beat Clashmore/Kinsalebeg 4-3 in a dramatic sudden death shootout to win the Western Intermediate hurling title at Fraher Field.

The sides finished level at 2-25 apiece after extra time. Casey forced a penalty shootout with a last gasp goal in the 81st minute.

Clashmore led by four points in extra time. Former Déise senior Brian O’Halloran shot five points from centre forward (three in extra time) while Tadhg De Burca bossed the game at centre back and scored 1-3.

Mikey Kearney got his ninth point of the night before that last gasp goal by Casey sent the match to penalties. It took sixteen shots to separate them.

Joint captain Casey converted twice while Shane Kearney and Finan Murray also found the net. Clashmore keeper Mark McGrath stopped three penalties but finished on the losing side. De Burca, Brian Ramsey and Edmond O’Halloran were all on target.

The Ballyduff matchwinner admitted that it was cruel on Clashmore. "It wasn't the best way to win it. Clashmore were the better team over the hour and the extra time as well. It's very tough on them. We're happy to get out of it."
