A lot of things would need to go their way, but Waterford FC could well head into next weekend just four points off Galway at the top of the SSE Airtricity First Division table.
It's a quick turnaround weekend with the Blues at home on Friday when they welcome Athlone to the RSC, then they make the trip to Limerick on Monday for their rescheduled fixture with Treaty United.
While a climb up the table is on offer, there is also the chance to make it four straight wins in the league with head coach Keith Long hoping to maintain his 100% record in charge of the team.
Long has enjoyed a fruitful period in his time at the helm with the team finally looking like title contenders despite the gap to the leaders. His team has scored 11 goals in their three victories, conceding just twice in that time.
"You have to be happy with the results. Three wins from three is a great return and a great start, but it's nothing more than that," he told WLR Sport this week.
"Some of the performances have been half decent but they've been in spells, in moments and not overly consistent. That's understandable because it's a new management team coming in, myself and Alan [Reynolds] with different ideas working alongside some of the coaches who have already been at the club like Murph, Gary and David Breen. It does take a while for ideas to translate into performances and we need to be patient because they are a young group and the players will make mistakes, hopefully, they will learn from them and hopefully will improve performances as we go."
Athlone come to town on Friday evening looking to reignite their season with just four wins in nine games so far. Their most recent win came against recent 2nd placeholders Cobh. The Town will be eyeing Waterford as a valuable scalp to take with a winning result putting them within a point of the Blues. The visitors have been low scoring in 2023 - with a two-goal difference being the best they have managed to date, while they have only managed to claim two clean sheets in that time.
After the Athlone challenge, attention then turns to Limerick and the rescheduled game with Treaty United. This game was due to be played at the end of March, but weather conditions saw the game called off at late notice.
Markets Field has started to become a frustrating venue for Waterford fans. It was the site of the mass stand clearing last year during the playoff game with Galway and last month traveling supporters were forced to turn their cars around mid-journey having already started the heading up for the Friday evening kick-off.
The form points towards a comfortable Blues win on Monday. Treaty have not been an impressive team this season, struggling for results every week. They have only managed one win, beating Longford 3-2 a fortnight ago. In their 8 games since the season returned, they have notched 1W, 3D & 4 L's for a total of 6 points, leaving them second-bottom.
Combined with the Blues 100% away record, it's hard to see anything other than a Blues win on Monday evening.
