ST. PATRICK'S ATHLETIC 1 - 0 WATERFORD FC
Darragh Burns scored the only goal of this match in Richmond Park on Tuesday night to secure all three points for the home side who are now joint-top of the Airtricity League Premier Division (along with Sligo Rovers who impressively beat Bohemians 3-1 at Dalymount Park and Shamrock Rovers who scored a late winner to defeat Drogheda United at Head in the Game Park).
He cut in from the right-wing after only three minutes and his left-footed strike took a cruel deflection off the Blues defender Kyle Ferguson which completely wrong footed Paul Martin the young Waterford goalkeeper.
Martin saved brilliantly from a Ronan Coughlan header five minutes before half-time. Waterford's best scoring opportunity arrived on 76 minutes. Kyle Ferguson picked out substitute Jack Stafford in front of goal but the latter was unable to control the ball.
Six Waterford players picked up yellow cards and Assistant Manager Mike Newell received a straight red card in the second half.
Kevin Sheedy the Blues manager said he was deeply upset by the decisions of the referee Graham Kelly (Cork) during the course of the 90 minutes.
Waterford FC will play at home to Longford Town on Saturday in what is a massive game, even at this early juncture in the season (Longford drew 0-0 with Finn Harps tonight). Kick- off is at 6 pm and WLR will bring you the game live thanks to McConnell's Toyota, Waterford with commentary team Ray Scott and Matt Keane.
