A famous win for the Waterford footballers in Wexford

The Waterford footballers stayed in contention for a Division 4 semi-final with a nail-biting 2-13 to 0-18 win at Wexford Park this afternoon.

Second-half goals by Darragh Corcoran and Brian Looby gave Shane Ronayne his first success as Deise boss.

Free taker Jason Curry scored six points while captain Conor Murray got four from play.

Michael Curry and John Elsted were dismissed for the visitors late on but 13 man Waterford held on for a slender victory after ten minutes of added time.

Speaking after the game, the Deise boss Shane Ronayne was ecstatic with his team's performance.

"Great battling qualities from the boys. I suppose, when we sat down last week, and we watched the game back, I think there were so many positives we could take out of it. I suppose we were missing a few ingredients. We were missing the scores. We had 50 attacks last weekend and we couldn't believe that when we looked at it. We had 31 shots and we scored ten. That was one big problem, and the second big problem was we didn't work hard enough in the second half when we lost the football."

"We had a very positive week and I suppose we were a bit apprehensive going down Tuesday night to Fraher Field. We had a very positive conversation about the good things that we're doing and the things that we were doing wrong."

"Yeah, somedays you're going to miss chances, but I think the work rate had to be improved, they knew that themselves. They were very very honest on Tuesday night. They're probably over critical of themselves you know."

"The most disappointing thing I will have taken out of Tuesday night was I think the boys are too critical of themselves. They're lacking a bit of belief I think. That happens when you're down in Division four and you're struggling for wins and things like that and you know, things are going against you."

"We had a great session on Thursday night in horrendous conditions down in Fraher Field, and I think there was a great spirit there and there was great togetherness from the boys."

"I'm really so proud of what they did in the second half today. Everything was going against them. We were down to 14 and you know they're really battled and look you've got to be cute to win games of football as well"
