Mount Sion put their name in the hat for the SHC quarter finals as a strong finish saw off fourteen man Clonea in the Walsh Park sunshine (1-20 to 0-17).
Austin Gleeson helped himself to eight points, including two sideline cuts, on his return from New York.
A Jack Meaney goal on four minutes was the difference at half time as Sion moved 1-8 to 0-8 ahead at the break. Ian O'Regan produced a double save from a Jason Gleeson penalty and a Billy Power rebound. Clonea defender Martin Scurry was dismissed in injury time.
A Ciaran Power point left just two points between them with thirteen minutes to go but late scores by Michael Gaffney, Evan McGrath, PJ Fanning, Charlie Costello and Gleeson was enough for Monastery men.
Gleeson says that he feels rejuvenated after his stint in the States.
He feels that there's more in the Waterford team than what they showed over the last two summers.
