New Waterford hurling captain Noel Connors couldn't bear to watch last year's All Ireland final between Limerick and Galway. After exiting the Munster championship in June, the Déise corner back chose to tune out for the rest of the summer.

He said that it was tough to learn that the Shannonsiders had emerged victorious after Waterford tasted defeat to Galway in the 2017 showpiece.  "The first thing you do is you say to yourself we were there twelve months ago and unfortunately we didn't get the result that everyone within Waterford wished. Obviously, with the poor year that took place it added a bit more bitterness to what was already a bitter day. It's one of those things when you see Limerick winning it, the first time for them to win it in a long time, and us being in a very similar position and being so close the previous year that's not a particularly nice feeling.

Connors, who currently works as a lecturer in WIT, is the first Passage clubman to captain the senior hurlers. "After eleven years on the panel, to be asked to be captain is a huge privilege for me, for the community of Passage and Dunmore and also for the family."

Listen to the full interview with Noel Connors on Lár Na Páirce from 6.10 this evening on WLR.
