Katie, Emma and Aoife Murray made history in 2012 when they became the first set of triplets to win All Ireland honours. They were all part of the successful Waterford Under 14 ladies football team. Three years later, they repeated the feat in Croke Park with the Déise intermediates.
Football was always number one for the Murrays according to Katie. "Only one sport! Stick to what you know!"
It all started at home as Aoife recalls. "Any spare time we had, we were out passing the ball, kicking the ball or shoving each other off the ball! It was always something we had a great interest in from our father, he always had a ball on hand when we were younger."
There was no holding back. "They were the most competitive games I ever played in my life! You'd have plenty of bruises! It toughened us up for when we needed it."
Emma says that their strength is their speed. "We're fairly similar. When I was growing up, I played in the backs and midfield and Katie and Aoife played in the forwards. We've a fairly similar playing style; running is our game. Our pace has always been to our advantage so we try to use that all over the pitch."
The Waterford ladies face five in a row chasing Dublin this afternoon in their first game of the All Ireland series at Balltinglass. Throw in is at 2 o'clock.
