Cahill: "They showed brilliant heart"

Waterford manager Liam Cahill says his players showed 'brilliant heart' to prevail in their All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship quarter-final against Tipperary.

The Deise won out on a scoreline of 4-28 to 2-27 in Pairc Ui Chaoimh, with goals coming from Austin Gleeson, Dessie Hutchinson, Stephen Bennett and Neil Montgomery.

Speaking after the match, Cahill expressed his pride:

"Brilliant heart again. Tipp looked to be coming at us in droves, that's the team they are - and that's what we expected. Usually, when they come at you like that, they get you done. They were unlucky maybe with two or three chances again where they could have got something out of the game, but I think overall Waterford probably played the better consistent hurling throughout the game. Tipperary lived off our scraps and mistakes to keep with us - so I'm happy that we got there in the end."

Cahill agreed that the game hinged on moments.

"That's championship hurling. Things can swing so quickly. I'd imagine it was a good entertaining game for the fans. You have to ride the punches, they come thick and fast with the quality of teams on display. We're looking forward to getting in with the players, focusing on recovery and getting them going again for six days time."

Cahill says he takes no particular pleasure in beating his native county.

"Today doesn't make me any taller, I don't take any particular pleasure in being part of this Waterford team that knocked Tipperary out of the championship. That, I must convey out there. There's fella's on that Tipperary panel who were great warriors for me. It was a difficult place to be today. We had a job to do. We got it done, and we move on now."
