Volunteers with Waterford's Samaritans branch will be taking part in a special event this weekend.

On Sunday, broadcaster Charlie Bird will lead a walk in Avondale in Wicklow to raise awareness for the charity.

It's being called the Charlie Bird Hand of Friendship Walk and gets underway at 11 o'clock in Avondale Forest Park.

It is supported by Coillte and you can participate in 5km or 1km walks at that and other Coillte sites across the country on the day.

Catherine Whelan is the Branch Publicity Officer for Waterford and the South East Samaritans.

"There are 21 Samaritan branches across Ireland," Catherine explained, speaking to WLR News, "We are one of those and we provide a phoneline for people to call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

"It doesn't matter what time of the morning - there will be a Samaritan there to listen.

"We are a non-judgmental service. We don't offer advice but all our volunteers are trained extensively in listening.
