On Sunday, March 5th, the Thomas Francis Meagher Tricolour Celebrations in Waterford culminated in a celebration of the 175th anniversary of the raising of the Irish flag.

The flag was flown for the very first time on the 7th of March, 1848 by Waterford patriot, Thomas Francis Meagher, at No. 33, The Mall, Waterford City.

Today, a parade of serving members and veterans of the Irish Defence Forces led a parade from the Granville Hotel (where Meagher was born), to the steps of the Waterford Crystal building on the Mall.

It was there at 12pm that an official flag-raising ceremony took place, with An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and a large number of dignitaries in attendance.
