Photographer Paul Kelly chatted to Maria about his new book In Hinde Sight.  This is a 'coffee table' book where Paul recreates the  postcards of John Hinde who was a pioneer of colour photography. Paul previously brought out a book called Return to Sender. 

Hinde was an English photographer, who lived from 1916 to 1997. From the latter half of the 1940s to the middle half of the 1950s, he entered the circus life, where he met his future wife. However, he soon returned to photography.  So, in 1956, Hinde left the circus and founded John Hinde Ltd. in Dublin. From there, he produced and distributed his colour pictures of Ireland. At the time of his death, millions of his postcards had been sold worldwide.

Hinde was responsible for people overseas thinking Ireland was full of red haired children, bringing in the turf and that we all had a donkey! His aesthetic was very important to him, and he wasn't averse to changing things if they didn't suit.

Paul has revisited the scene of several of John's postcard scenes to see what's changed. These scenes include some locations in Waterford like Dunmore East, Tramore and Dungarvan.

John Hinde's postcards are a reminder of simpler times when sending postcards from wherever you were  was considered  part of your holiday.
