In his latest tech slot on The Big Breakfast Blaa, Jordan Casey of  SCNE/HUB looked at how the  European Commission is close to enacting legislation that will prove to be a game changer for Apple. This being that at all mobile phones and other electronic devices sold in Europe will be required to have a common charging standard.

What does this mean for smartphone users?

As it stands, mobile phones sold throughout the 27 countries in the EU come with a variety of charger types.  According to Reuters, half of the chargers sold in 2018 had a micro USB connector, while just under a third used USB-C, and about one in five phones sold came with Apple’s Lightning connector. EU regulators are not happy with this status quo, as they feel that it's leading to an unnecessary excess of electronic waste. They believe that consumers should not have to keep discarding old chargers and that the one universal type would put an end to this. In fact, Jordan tell us, the long term aim is to sell smartphones without any chargers at all.
