With five Waterford boxers sent to compete in Dublin these past two weeks, four made it into the finals and two came home holding gold medals.

Kelyn Cassidy defended his status as senior elite light heavyweight champion, while Christina Desmond is now amongst the ranks of those who have earned top honours at the national level.

The two medals that came home with Desmond and Cassidy, marking the first time since 1998 that Waterford can boast two senior titles from a single championships, an even more impressive feat when we consider that there are only four clubs in the county.

A very quick turnaround was needed for Cassidy who faced Brian Kennedy in the semi-finals on Friday evening, before stepping through the ropes again on Saturday for the decider with Jason Clancy. Kelyn won all three rounds comfortably to make it back-to-back titles at light heavyweight for the Saviours Crystals boxer.

Christina Desmond, wearing the singlet of Dungarvan and the Gardaí, was a resounding winner in her 70 kg final with Tiffany O'Reilly. An excellent controlling performance from Desmond saw her winning with a clean sweep on the judge's scorecards for her first senior title.

St Paul's boxing club secretary Neil Gough sat down with WLR Sport to look back on how it all played out in Dublin.
