On Deise Today this morning, Damien Tiernan was joined in studio by Regina Mangan from Liberty Blue Estate Agents in Waterford, while on the line was Brenda Power, columnist with the Irish Daily Mail.
Earlier this week, Brenda wrote a column in which she criticised the winter eviction ban that has been introduced by the government, something which Regina Mangan has also labelled 'useless'.
The government plans to bring in an evictions ban from the 1st of November. Taoiseach Micheál Martin says evictions will return on a phased basis from April 2023, giving people some certainty through the winter. Sinn Féin says it will support the move and called for legislation to be brought this week - with the issue set to be debated in the Dail on Wednesday.
"This is a political move by our government. I have said it over and over and over in this studio. This is not a housing crisis - this is a political issue. It is wreckless behaviour by the government, because what we have seen over the last three years, and it's expediating - is a huge exodus of private property owners. These small property owners typically own only 1-2 properties, and 80% of our landlords only own one property."
