The connections between Waterford and Newfoundland were discussed this morning on Déise Today.

Darryl and his wife came to Waterford for the past fortnight after making friends with Anthony Flynn, who went to live in eastern Canada from St John’s Park 10 years ago.

Anthony came back for a holiday and wedding of a the relative and Darryl travelled to Waterford for the first time.

Damien met them in Jack Meade’s at the weekend and heard Darryl’s story and how he speaks with phrases which originated from the south east when people left here hundreds of years ago to go live and work in Newfoundland.

Many people in the Canadian province still speak with a Waterford or Wexford accent and Darryl’s accent shows the connections.

A number of documentaries have been done about this in the past, including here on WLR and on RTE.
