AUSTRALIA is to ban recreational vaping and tighten other aspects of e-cigarette laws, it announced in recent days.

The measures represent the biggest crackdown on the tobacco industry in more than a decade - and it's all aimed at trying to stop an alarming rise in teenage vaping.

The government aims to ban all disposable vapes -  which often comes in fruity flavours - as well as ban the import of non-prescription vapes and limit nicotine levels, aiming for the sale of vapes to be confined to helping smokers quit.

Nicotine vapes already require a prescription in Australia, but the industry is poorly regulated and a black market is thriving.

Health Minister Mark Butler says the products are creating a new generation of nicotine addicts in Australia.

On 'Deise Today' this morning (Tuesday), Maria McCann discussed the story and whether Ireland could potentially be heading in the same direction as Australia!
She spoke to John Mallon who is the spokesperson for the 'Forest Eireann' lobby group which describes itself as the 'voice and friend' of the smoker.
