THE N25 needs to be placed on the National Development Plan for significant upgrades  to make it safer.

That's according to Waterford council roads engineer Gabriel Hynes who also said political pressure is necessary to make this happen.

Neither the council nor Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) can do anything until this road is under the plan, he told Damien Tiernan.

The N25, which connects Waterford to Cork and Wexford, has seen a significant number of fatal accidents in recent years and there are widespread calls for a major overhaul.

In 2022, it was listed as one of the most dangerous roads in Ireland as it had the most fatalities of any Irish road between January 2017 and September of that year.

The issue was discussed earlier this week at the monthly meeting of Waterford Council's Dungarvan and Lismore District.
