RESIDENTS of the Waterford Council-owned block at Mount Suir in Gracedieu should be removed from the building to allow major remediation works to take place, two local councillors have claimed.

The 18 apartments in Block C at Mount Suir have serious damp, mould and other health and safety issues, according to its residents and the councillors who say there is a "duty of care" there now to the tenants, many of them with young children.

A year after the tenants there first highlighted concerns about their living conditions to 'Deise Today', they've been back on the radio this week highlighting how major problems still exist.

The Council took ownership of the 18 apartments in the past two years, it's understood, and according to Labour councillor Seamus Ryan, major roofing works now need to take place there to sort the problems.

Cllr Jim Grffin, of Sinn Fein, also told Deise Today this morning that there have been long-standing damp, mould, and health and safety problems up in Mount Suir, not only with this apartment block but at least one other on the site as well as nearby housing.

On this morning's (Thursday's) 'Deise Today', Damien spoke to council tenants Ines and Samuel who both outlined horrendous problems with mould and leaks, amongst other issues.
