A PURPOSE-built industrial town with a rich history and heritage, the 'model village' of Portlaw may have just been presented with its biggest opportunity to shine!

Though the specifics remain top secret, it's been confirmed that one of Ireland's largest hospitality companies has bought the once-magnificent Mayfield House at auction - and that a luxury hotel and leisure centre are about to be developed on the key site.

Brophy Cusack confirmed on Wednesday (April 6) that the historic site was sold via the online auction, in what's being hailed as hugely exciting news for the community of Portlaw.

Once home to the wealthy and famous Malcomson family and later the headquarters of Irish Tanners, Mayfield House has been in a state of dereliction for many years but it's potential has been plain to see.

And both Paudie Coffey of the Portlaw Community Enhancement Group and Ger Crotty of Portlaw Heritage Centre spoke about their hopes about opportunities ahead for the site - and the town and community - on foot of the great news..
