Over the Bank Holiday weekend, Waterford gardaí will be carrying out multiple checkpoints around the county in effort to improve road safety.

Over the past 12 years, the gardaí have completed much research on road traffic accidents and have found that Bank Holidays are the worst time for road traffic accidents that cause serious injuries and fatalities.

Inspector Niall Daly, Inspector for Road Policing in Waterford, spoke to Maria McCann on Déise Today this morning (October 27) about the issue.

He covered the increased number of checkpoints that will be in place this weekend, the high number of people that persist to drink and drug drive, and he stressed the importance again of wearing reflective clothing in winter.

A new study completed by AA found that there is a rise in road collisions once the clocks go back for winter.

Inspector Daly explained that this is due to the reduced visibility of pedestrians on the roads and he appealed to road users to have extra caution over the coming week.
