Dalal Sayed joined Damien this morning to talk about her debut book which documents her journey to Ireland from Syria.

She left Syria in 2011 after the Civil War broke out and arrived in Cappoquin six years later.

She had been training to be a primary school teacher in Damascus when her house was bombed and she left.

Dalal, her husband, and two babies spent five years living in a tent in Kurdistan, Iraq, and another year and seven months in a tent in Greece.

There she had heard that Irish people were friendly and she decided to come here.

When she arrived in Cappoquin, she was welcomed warmly by her neighbours who helped to teach her English.

The book

Dalal's book  Escape from War to Live in Peace  will be available from 2:30 on Saturday in Waterford Library.

It is also available in David Walls in Dungarvan and in the Cappoquin Library.

She wrote the book to help people understand how hard her journey to Ireland has been, in the hope that people will be more open to any kind of refugee coming here.

Dalal's life now

The war is still happening in Syria but Dalal and her family would like to return if it ended.

She is currently on Level Four of a childcare course and hopes to work in the industry once she gets her level six qualification.

Her husband is working in a restaurant in Cappoquin and her children are in school.
