THE CEO of Waterford City and County Council says Waterford is on course to see big changes with its infrastructure in the coming years.

Michael Walsh said a real "significant transition" will happen in the city.

He said Waterford is different from other cities and wouldn't have the "volumes" required for a light rail system, for example, like some other cities like Limerick.

But he said, what we will avail us is a brand new bus transport system with a new fleet and re-ordered transport route.

This, he said, was the 'best fit' for Waterford at the moment in terms of all the indicators.

Michael Walsh was speaking to Damien Tiernan on Deise Today this morning (Tuesday) following the publication yesterday of the new National Development Plan.

He said overall, he was satisfied with the capital programme contained in it having such an emphasis on regional growth.

Michael Walsh also, meanwhile, gave an update in terms of the development of the north quays, while speaking to Damien.

He acknowledged there has been "shift" in the council's approach to this, which he would discuss with councillors next week before going public.

However, he did say they are "engaging with the market place" at the moment in terms of possible private development.
