University Hospital Waterford is experiencing some of its busiest ever days at present.

110 patients were waiting in the A&E Department before 12pm on Sunday whilst people have waited 20 hours to be seen in some cases.

Sinn Fein Councillor Jim Griffin recently helped a 96-year-old man who first had a three-hour wait for an ambulance and then further difficulty at A and E.

He outlined what happened on Deise Today.

"This 96-year-old gentleman had an incarcerated hernia. He was in severe pain and we called for an ambulance. The GP recommended that we call for an ambulance immediately - some three and a half to four hours later, I was still in the house with that man, waiting for an ambulance."

"I had made several 999 calls on behalf of the family", explained Cllr. Griffin. "His daughter was taking care of her mother who is in palliative care in a bed next to the gentleman, who was on the floor. They're at such an age in their life that they cannot use the upstairs, so all of this was happening in a small room downstairs."
