A special event to mark 100 years (to the day) since the arrival of An Garda Siochana in Waterford is taking place this coming Friday (October 14).
A Waterford Civic Trust Heritage Blue Plaque is being unveiled by Mayor John O'Leary at Lane Lane at 11am, following on from a march - from Plunkett Station - by a group of serving and retired members of the gardai. They'll be led on this by the Garda Band.
On Saturday, October 14 1922, three sergeants and 28 guards of the newly-formed Civic Guard arrived in Waterford city.
They were met at the railway station by representatives of the Corporation.
The installation and unveiling of the Blue Plaque this Friday are the result of Waterford Civic Trust working in association with the Retired Garda Siochana Members Association, An Garda Siochana and Waterford City and County Council.
Today (Tuesday), Damien Tiernan was joined in studio by Eugene Broderick from Waterford Civic Trust, serving Garda Inspector Gavin Hegarty and retired sergeant Dave Burke to talk about the upcoming event.
