A woman in her forties has died and two boys aged 12 and 10 have been rescued, after their car went into the River Lee in Cork City last night.
Passers-by raised the alarm shortly before 9pm at Kennedy Quay and Gardai, Ambulance and the Fire service rushed to the scene.
Rescue Helicopter 117 from Waterford also responded.
The boys were taken to hospital for treatment before being discharged into the care of their family, and an investigation is now underway.
Independent Councillor and former Deputy Lord Mayor, Ken O'Flynn, says it's a sad day for Cork:
"Well look, even just being around my own constituency just this morning, talking to people and meeting people in shops etc, everybody is in a state of shock.
"Everybody is saying how tragic [it is] and how sorry they are for the family involved."
A post-mortem is due to be carried out on the woman's body today.
