More than 50 amendments were agreed yesterday for Waterford's County Development Plan.

The new draft of the plan, which covers the next six years, will once again be open for public submissions for a number of weeks.

Housing, commerce, climate action and various other topics are all outlined in this document.

And Waterford Mayor, Joe Kelly says it's important that the public knows what it's about:

"It sets out the key zonings, certainly in the development area for industry, for commerce, and indeed for housing.

"It sets the appropriate zonings for the city and the county all the way out to 2028. So, the plan itself has a huge impact on all kinds of development, city and county-wide."

Hundreds of public submissions received

In total, almost 400 public submissions were received and discussed before this final draft was decided on at yesterday's special meeting.

One of the hot topics covered was wind farms.

"Places in the county for where wind farms could be located and areas where wind farms can't be were discussed," Mayor Kelly says.

"That's an issue that is always hot and heavy in a particular area where a wind farm is going to be proposed."

He says that changes were made, based on the submissions received:

"The map has changed significantly from what was existing currently, to what we're now proposing. The locations are reduced.

"They are now in areas that may find favour with not all the locals but with a lot of locals. That's a part of planning as well.

"During the lead-up to this, we had many, many email submissions from people interested in off-shore wind farms - again saying that they either support them or they don't. Or, if they do, that they have to be either 12 kilometres off-shore or some are saying up to 22 kilometres off-shore.

"We didn't directly deal with off-shore in the development plan, but this is the kind of engagement that's going on."

The latest draft is due to be published on Waterford City and County Council's website in the coming days.
