A proposal has been submitted to An Bord Pleanala to establish a wind-farm in the Knockmealdown Mountains.
The proposal is under consideration as a Strategic Infrastructure Development (SID) and would be at the base of the mountains along the West Waterford / South Tipperary border.
The application is proposing to construct 12 wind turbines of 6.2 megawatts each, with a combined output of 74.4 megawatts.
The intended height of the turbines has not been specified.
The proposal was submitted by EMPower in what they refer to as the 'Dyrick Hill Wind Farm' project.
The project is located approximately 16km northwest of Dungarvan and 8.5km southwest of Ballymacarbry. It is in the townlands of Dyrick, Ballynaguilkee Upper, Broemountain and Lisleagh Mountain.
Under the Waterford County Development Plan being devised by Waterford City & County Council at present , the area is ‘’open for consideration’’ for wind farm development.
According to EM Power, they have commissioned Sligo based environmental and engineering consultancy, Jennings O’Donovan & Partners Limited to complete a detailed environmental assessment for the proposed project.
The company's consultees will include National Parks and Wildlife, Inland Fisheries Ireland, area telecommunication providers, Transport Infrastructure Ireland, Waterford County Council, The Irish Aviation Authority and Fáilte Ireland.
