JD Wetherspoons has finally opened its pub in Waterford City after a license was granted at a hearing this morning.

The Arundel Gate is located on Arundel Square, and takes its name from the nearby gate in Waterford's ancient city wall.

The opening of the pub is a long-time coming, and has been subject to a number of delays, with the Pandemic furthering hampering developments.

Work began on the venue in June 2021, with an initial plan view to open in December. However, the opening date was then pushed back to today, April 27th.

Around €3.8 million has been invested in the pub creating 80 full and part-time jobs.

Spokesperson for JD Wetherspoons Eddie Gershon said The Arundel Gate will have a competitively priced food and drink offering, and prides itself on fact that each establishment is different:

"All our pubs have a similar food and drink menu, although that may vary slightly, but they all look different. Some are former churches or theatres for example. In Waterford the building was a former bank and lady's clothes shop, and we take great pride in having a lot of historical aspects to the building's past," he said.
