Pub operator JD Wetherspoon is to finally start development work on its new pub in Waterford.
The British pub chain bought adjoining buildings 8 and 9 Arundel Square, and 17 and 18 Broad Street, at auction in December 2014.
Seven years later and work is set to begin on the venue on Monday 28 June with the pub set to open on Tuesday 14 December.
A total of 3.8 million euros will be invested in the development of the pub, which will be called The Arundel Gate, according to the owners.
The pub, which is being built on the site of a former bank and ladies wear shop. will create 70 full and part-time jobs.
Arundel Square takes its name from the nearby gate of the same name in Waterford’s ancient city wall.
Long-since demolished, the Arundel Gate stood in Arundel Lane, which is immediately north of the pub site.
The pub will be on two floors (ground and first floor) and feature two enclosed courtyard terraced gardens, as well as an open kitchen.
Historical photos and details of local history, as well as artwork and images of local scenes and characters of the town will be displayed in the pub, together with information boards relating to events.
The pub will also feature commissioned artwork.
The Arundel Gate will be open from 8am until 11.30pm (Monday to Thursday inclusive), 8am to 12.30am (Friday and Saturday) and 8am to 11pm (Sunday).
Wetherspoon chief executive John Hutson said: “ We are delighted that development work on our new pub in Waterford is set to start.
“We believe that the pub will be a great asset to the town and will appeal to a cross section of people.
“Hopefully our investment will act as a catalyst for other businesses to invest in Waterford.”
