As thousands continue to flee Ukraine, locals in Waterford are still doing what they can to help.

Truck-loads of goods will be leaving the county in the coming days, headed for the Polish-Ukraine border to deliver donations to those in need.

A call is now going out for the use of a storage unit in Waterford City that could be used by those gathering items before they are shipped.

Mayor Joe Kelly says one of the groups locally has nowhere to put them now:

"The Ukrainian contacts that I have asked me if we could put out the call for somebody that would provide some storage facility or small warehouse, where goods and food and medical supplies etc, to go to Ukraine, can be gathered and stored together for packing into vans and shipping onwards.

"They don't have that facility.

"They were using a hall belonging to the De La Salle Brothers but that's part the school, so that's not a solution. We need a lock-up."

Mayor Kelly says any space would be greatly appreciated: "If someone had maybe a spare warehouse that they could let them have for a couple of weeks or whatever it might be, so that the food and medical supplies donated by the people of Waterford can be put there as a staging point."

Meanwhile, a Waterford TD is suggesting that holiday homes be made available to Ukrainian refugees coming to Ireland.

It's believed around 20,000 could make their way here in the coming weeks.

Independent Deputy Matt Shanahan has voiced concerns about where accommodation can be found.

Speaking during Leaders' Questions in the Dáil, he said it's a difficult scenario:

"Some vacant properties that might be available, particularly holiday homes, that people might be of a mind to make available to Ukrainian people - they're wondering is it possible to do this without creating tenancy rights or having short-term lettings.

"Maybe this is something that government can have a look at because I think we have a difficulty in terms of how we are going to accommodate a significant number of Ukrainian refugees."

A peaceful vigil is also going to be held this Sunday at 12pm, outside City Hall on the Mall in Waterford.
